What kind of format will the course program of the SLI have in the winter term 2020/21?
For the coming semester, the language course program at the SLI is planned in a hybrid form. This means that mainly online modules, virtual classrooms or blended learning scenarios will be offered. Under favorable circumstances they could be supplemented or replaced by face-to-face sessions at a later date. In this way, each course can be adapted to both the current situation and the respective course size, while at the same time ensuring the safety of all participants and lecturers.

Foreign Language Courses at the SLI
When do the foreign language courses start in the winter term?
The start of the course programme is planned for 2 November 2020.
When will the course programme be published?
It will probably be announced and be available for online booking on our website on 1 September 2020.
How can I register for a foreign language course?
Registrations can be made via this link from 1 September 2020.
Do I still have to take a placement test?
Our online placement test for English, French, Italian and Spanish is still mandatory for initial registration and is available on our website.
Can I obtain credit points in foreign language courses in the winter term 2020/2021?
Yes, also in the winter term 2020/2021 credit points can be obtained in the language courses.
Will there be an increase in course fees?
No, course fees will stay the same.
In case of a continued closure of the university can the SLI pass on exam results to the examination offices?
Yes, we are in regular contact with the examination offices and can submit exam results so they can be credited to your study account.
For how long can I apply for a refund of course fees?
Refunds can be applied for up to one semester after de-registration.
How can I receive results, performance reports and certificates?
For exam results please contact the SLI by email (audio{at}uni-wuppertal.de). Certificates and performance reports are kept at the SLI until they can be collected.
Will there be any DAAD-Tests?
For English, the SLI regularly offers DAAD tests online (via the video conferencing system "Zoom") to students and members of the University of Wuppertal and all other universities.
For tests in other languages please contact the SLI (audio{at}uni-wuppertal.de), so we can pass on your request to our respective language teachers.
German courses at the SLI
Will there be any German courses in the winter term 2020/2021?
Yes, there will be German courses in the winter term 2020/2021 starting with an e-learning phase. Whether the courses will be continued online or classroom teaching on campus will be resumed has to be decided on the basis of current developments at a later date. Participants will then be informed accordingly.
I am from abroad and will start a preparatory German course in the winter term 2020/2021.
Do I have to register online for the German course?
If the International Office has received all relevant documents for enrolment on time, information about the German courses will be send out to your German address by post. You will receive a ZIM PIN to activate your university e-mail account and to log on to StudiLöwe, the university’s course management programme. We will inform all new participants of our German courses about payment procedures by email. After the payment of the course fees has been confirmed, we will send another email with further information about the courses.
In case I should not be allowed to enter Germany from abroad in the winter term, can I have my admission transferred to the 2021 summer semester?
In this case, inquiries should be made at the International Office by email (intsek{at}uni-wuppertal.de).
Are foreign students from partner universities and ERASMUS students allowed to participate in the preparatory German courses?
Yes, students from partner universities and ERASMUS students are allowed to join our German programme. Please contact us by email if you are interested (ajohn{at}uni-wuppertal.de).
Will there be a placement test for the German courses?
Yes, there will be an online placement test. The link to access the test will be send by email.
When do the online German classes start?
They start on Monday, 26th October 2020.
How long does a course, comprising one language level, run?
A course runs eight weeks. During this time the next language level can be reached. The course ends with a written examination. In the winter term 2020/2021 the first course will be held from 26 Oct 2020 to 18 Dec 2020 and the second from 18 Jan 2021 to 13 March 2021.
When are the exams held?
There is a written exam after each course and thus each level. The examination period for the first course of the winter semester 2020/2021 is scheduled for the time between 18 Dec 2020 and 14 Jan 2021 (except Christmas holidays 24 Dec 2020 – 10 Jan 2021). The DSH exam consists of a written and an oral exam, the latter being held after the written part.
What do I need for the German course?
Enrolled student get access to the webmail-system and the learning management system (moodle) of our university. Please make sure you have registered for both systems before semester start by using the following links.

You will also need reliable Internet access at home with sufficient data volume and, if possible, a computer, laptop or tablet. The smartphone should be the absolute exception.
Can I participate in the courses from abroad?
Yes, with two restrictions.
Admission and enrolement at the University of Wuppertal must have been completed. Participation from abroad is only possible during the online phase. As soon as classroom teaching is resumed, students must be present on campus.
Which textbooks do I need for the German course?
We work with the Spektrum Deutsch series of the Schubert publishing house.
A1: ISBN 978-3-941323-29-2
A2: ISBN 978-3-941323-31-5
B1: ISBN 978-3-941323-34-6
You do not need a textbook for the B2 level.
For levels B1 and B2 you need an additional grammar book for intermediate level from the publishing house Liebaug-Dartmann, ISBN 3-922989-51-9.
Can I receive any certificates when participating successfully in the German courses of the winter term 2020/2021?
Yes, certificates will also be issued after the winter semester 2020/2021.
When is the next DSH exam?
The next DSH exam will probably take place on 18 Sept 2020. Further dates will be announced shortly after the next exam.
When I have already attended the German course in the previous semester, do I have to register online?
No, we will contact all German course participants from the summer term 2020 and inform them about our payment procedures. As soon as your payment has been confirmed we will send an email with further information.
How do I obtain performance reports, certificates for public authorities or/and written statements about holiday periods when attending German courses?
We send performance reports directly to the International Office on your behalf.
Certificates for public authorities or written statements concerning holiday periods will be send to you directly by email in PDF-format.
Will there be any evening courses ("German in the Evening")?
Yes, the evening courses (A1 to B1+) will take place either as online courses or as classroom teaching on campus, depending on current developments.
Will there be a placement test for the evening courses?
New students will be assigned to their respective courses on the basis of an online placement test. Please contact audio{at}uni-wuppertal.de to be provided with the link for the test. Students who have already attended courses of the programme “German in the evening” in the summer term 2020 are requested to register for the follow-up course.

Credit points can be obtained in the preparatory German courses and the German courses for special purposes which you can attend during your studies.
